Summit golf finishes fourth at Indian Peeks

LAFAYETTE — The Summit High golf team continued their steady conference play with a fourth place finish in a Jeffco League match held at Indian Tree Golf Course in Lafayette, Thursday.

The Tigers shot a four-person total of 336 to finish 11 shots behind third-place Wheat Ridge.

J.P. Schoffield led the way for the Tigers with a personal-best score of 80. Following close behind was Dak Dice with an 81. Brady Sandsmark and Brian Metzger also had scores that counted towards the team total with an 83 and a 92, respectively.

D’Evelyn strengthened their stranglehold on the overall conference lead by firing a 293, good for first place. Evergreen finished second at 321.

When all five players on the Summit team finished their rounds, it appeared the Tigers had shot a season-best score of 326.

However, when a player from an opposing team noticed a discrepancy on one of the Tigers’ scorecards, the result led to sophomore Kyle Metzger being disqualified.

“He had a hole where he was making a big number and forgot to count a penalty stroke from a hazard,” head coach Gary Sorensen said. “ ... He’s the one of the most, if not the most, stand up guy we’ve got. It’s not like he tried to cheat. I feel really bad for him.”

Though the Tigers weren’t allowed to count Metzger’s 82, it wound up not impacting where they finished on the day.

“It was a real good lesson learned,” Sorensen said.

The Tigers now sit fourth overall in the Jeffco League standings with two conference matches remaining. Sandsmark is tied for 10th individually, while Dak Dice is alone in 15th.

Summit is next in action Monday at the Roaring Fork Invitational.
