Community holds fundraisers for Velasco family

Father killed in June motorcycle crash

SUMMIT COUNTY — Two separate fundraisers will be held in the next two weeks to benefit a Breckenridge family after the father was killed in a motorcycle accident earlier this summer.

The Manny Velasco Memorial Fundraiser will be held Saturday from 2-8 p.m. at the Frisco Peninsula Recreation Area, and the Manny Velasco Golf Tour at Copper Mountain Golf Course will be on Sept. 14.

The proceeds from both events will go to Terri Delion and her children: 14-year-old Alexandra, 8-year-old Jessica and 7-year-old Andrew.

The family was left without a husband and father when 34-year-old Manny Velasco, the well-known president of Breckenridge Mechanical, crashed on Route 9 near Farmer’s Korner on June 6.

“They were effectively left without any income or proceeds or anything like that,” said Mike Krueger, a committee member for the fundraiser. “They are in a pickle. We are trying to help keep them afloat in the county and help pay some of their immediate bills and help with some of their long-term needs.”

The memorial fundraiser is a family event that will feature live music, food and a silent auction to raise money for the family. The silent auction includes a flat-screen TV and software gift certificates. The event also will include activities for the kids, such as an inflatable moon-bounce and face painting.

The golf tournament will be a four-person, best-ball scramble that costs $400 per team to enter. The event also will include a silent auction for gift certificates from different local businesses before and after the golf outing.

The money from this event will go towards a college fund for the three children said Dan Reisdorph, the organizer.

The “Manny Velasco Fund” also been established at Wells Fargo Bank.

For some, helping the family comes without ever having met Manny himself.

“They are just one of those families that you don’t want to leave (Summit County),” said committee point-person Anna Higgins Sones. “The weird thing is I never met Manny personally, but my motivation is that the kids are so wonderful, and Terri is a wonderful mom...Everyone we talk to is like: ‘Oh my gosh, what can I do?’ because Manny was such a wonderful guy.”

Both fundraisers are planning to make the events an annual occurrence and for that Terri is more than thankful.

“You know, I wasn’t too surprised because this community is known for (helping), but I truly am overwhelmed with how big they are,” Sones said. “I expected them to be a small little thing, but I am, for lack of a better word, overwhelmed with the generosity of the community.”
