Summit County Schools and Education

In a county where people with master’s degrees are almost as likely to work in a grocery store as they are in a professional office, Summit County, Colorado, offers plenty of educational resources in the communities of Breckenridge, Dillon, Frisco, Silverthorne and Summit Cove.

Ski bums don’t have to trade in a college education for fresh tracks: Colorado Mountain College, am accredited two-year college, provides quality education and low tuition.

Summit School District includes six small neighborhood elementary schools, one middle school and one high school. The district serves 2,775 students and has approximately 500 employees. The gender split of students is about equal (unlike the adult population here).

Summit students perform well above state levels in reading, writing, math and science as measured by CSAP tests.

The district’s graduation rate is 81 percent. The high school offers two alternative programs for students who struggle with traditional school settings.

Elementary Schools

The neighborhood elementary schools located in Frisco, Dillon Valley, Summit Cove, Breckenridge and Silverthorne have an average student-to-teacher ratio of 17:1.

The Kindergarten through 5th grace academic program in addition to primary math, science and language curriculum also includes Spanish, art, music, physical education and winter activities.

All six elementary schools are in various stages of implementing the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Program model of inquiry. Dillon Valley Elementary has implemented a dual Language program for kindergarten and first grades and plans to expand the program to include all grades.

Middle and High Schools

Summit Middle School

Summit Middle School features a full-school International Baccalaureate Middle Years Program with honors courses available in core academic areas. The middle school recently underwent a $24.5 million renovation that resulted in two smaller learning communities, each serving 450 equally diverse groups of students.

Summit High School

Summit High School offers a full selection of academic courses, including opportunities for students to earn college credit at Colorado Mountain College, AP honors classes, and an International Baccalaureate Diploma Program (IBDP) for grades 11 and 12.

Colorado Mountain College

CMC offers certificates or two-year degrees — you know, the regular stuff: associate degrees in arts, sciences and general studies.

Plus it provides education in art, business, information technology, construction/trades, culinary arts, environmental studies, graphic design and photography, law enforcement and emergency services, nursing, outdoor studies, ski and resort management (how cool is that), teaching and veterinary technology.

Plenty of people just pick up a class for fun — check out the catalogue to bone up on your Spanish, see what develops with a camera, or learn about real estate.

CMC’s Center for Lifelong Learning is all about exploring, expanding and experiencing.

Maybe belly dancing allures you. Or Feldenkrais — a class that will help you reconnect with your body. Or Capoeira — a Brazilian dance/martial arts (they have the regular martial arts you’ve heard of too). Or learn how to rock climb, write creatively, act or go on wildflower hikes.
