Synagogue of the Summit Welcomes Sefer Torah

Synagogue of the Summit (SOS) welcomes the first specially handwritten copy of the Torah to Summit County today at 7 p.m. at the Summit County Community and Senior Center near Frisco.

The Torah is comprised of the first five books of Jewish Scriptures or the Old Testament.

This Sefer Torah was written in Lithuania before 1850 and was donated on permanent loan to SOS by the Sinai Free Synagogue in Mount Vernon, New York.

A scribe took more than one year to duplicate all 304,805 letters.

A special ceremony of welcome will be led by Rabbi Joel Schwartzman and congregants of Synagogue of the Summit. This unique occasion is open to the public. All are welcome. Refreshments will follow the ceremony.
