Cross country defends home turf

FRISCO — Heading into Saturday’s 9,100 Ft. Invitational at the Frisco Nordic Center, Summit senior cross country runners Zach Armstrong and Chris Rice had a game plan for their only home meet of the season.

“It’s not like we knew the course like the back of our hand,” Rice said, “but we know the terrain well.”

And the course, which both described as an “all-around runner’s” course, had a large incline early in the race, which could feel like running into a wall for runners that started at too fast a pace.

“We wanted to keep the first lap clean and just stay in it,” Armstrong said. “Then when we got to the second lap, see where we were. We wanted to see how we’d feel and then sprint for the end.”

The strategy must have worked, as Armstrong and Rice finished fifth and sixth, respectively. Their high finishes led the Tigers boys’ team to a fourth-place finish and a season-low score of 97.

“Couldn’t be happier,” Summit head coach Heather Quarantillo said of the boys’ performances. “ ... It’s our best boys’ team score, maybe ever. ... Just a really strong finish.”

But the boys’ team wasn’t the only Tigers squad to impress Saturday. The girls’ team had their third top-two finish in as many races, as they finished behind only Class 5A Palmer High School (Summit competes at Class 4A in cross country) with 65 points.

Sophomore Cali Greksa, despite not being 100 percent healthy, led the way for the Tigers with a solid eighth-place finish and a time of 22:05.6.

“She was having some allergy problems,” Quarantillo said. “She ran as strong as she could have and had a really good finish for her team. To be able to do that and not feel like her best is definitely a testament to how strong she is.”

Greksa, though, wasn’t overly pleased with her performance.

“I felt really tired and I think that I could have done better,” Greksa said.

Next for the girls’ team was Tess Olson, also a sophomore, who wound up in ninth place at 22:14.5.

Olson and Greksa finishing so close to one another was part of the Tigers’ strategy coming into the race.

“(Our team) stayed together for the first lap, then we started to spread out a little,” Olson said. “It’s nice to run and have your teammates their with you.”

Following close behind Olson was sophomore Julie Bishop (22:54.7) who finished

in 12th. Freshman Alisha Scheifley (23:20) and sophomore Julia Hayes (23:41) rounded out the Tigers’ scores that counted, finishing 17th and 19th, respectively.

Juniors Samantha Lunsky (24:52) and Meghan Kane also competed for the Tigers.

“Our girls finished fourth here last year. So it’s a nice improvement,” Quarantillo said. “Palmer is a very good team. We invite those strong teams because we want the competition. We want to see how we stack up.”

Palmer also won the 12-team boys’ side of the competition with an extremely low score of 32. Ridge View Academy (77) finished second, and Moffat County High School (89) finished in third-place.

After Armstrong and Rice, junior Will Radigan (20:16) was next for the Tigers in 22nd-place.

Freshmen Tucker Mccrerey (20:49) and Quinton Bobb (21:43) gave Summit its last two scores that counted toward the team total.

Duncan Koehn (22:11) and John Willis (23:33) also competed on the boys’ team.

After a solid performance Saturday, the Tigers now look ahead to a meet Tuesday at Dakota Ridge High School, the same site as their league race.

“It will be good for them ... because it is a fast course,” Quarantillo said. “We haven’t had a flat course, really, this year.”

The meet is scheduled to start at 3:30 p.m.
