FRISCO A new surgeon in town has put his hands on the Denver Broncos, Colorado Rockies, the U.S. Ski Team and champions of many other sports.
You have to be vigilant and expect it all, Dr. Sonny Gill said of his work in sports medicine. It can run the gamut: Theres never a dull moment.
The orthopaedic surgeon who specializes on the spine and neck began serving Summit County at Steadman Hawkins Clinic in Frisco last week.
He continues to work in sports medicine but offers his skill to anyone in need, from children with scoliosis to elderly people with pinched nerves.
I like getting people back to their activity of choice, he said.
Gill served most recently at Steadman Hawkins Clinic of the Carolinas in South Carolina. He returns to Colorados High Country where he grew up with his wife and 2-year-old daughter.
I definitely missed the area, he said.
Gill said a fascination with the structural mechanics of muscles, tendons and bones led to an interest in orthopaedic medicine.
Hearing the gratitude of healed patients is the most rewarding part of the job for Gill.
(Its) the simplest thing, when somebody comes back from surgery and says: Thank you, you know, I can do things I couldnt before, he said.
To maintain a healthy spine, Gill recommends participating in core strengthening activities such as swimming, as well as keeping a good posture.
Unfortunately, some folks can take every measure to keep healthy and still have spine problems because of genetic characteristics.
You cant pick your parents, Gill said.
Gill will take a trip on Oct. 4 to Kona, Hawaii, to serve at the Ironman Triathlon World Championships.
This is a familiar event to the him, as an avid triathlete whos competed in such events as the Kiawah Island Triathlon in South Carolina.
It keeps me really healthy, he said.
Hes been training for and competing in triathlons for two years, having entered the sport because I always did all three (running, swimming and biking), but not together.
He said he figured: Why not just combine all three? Make it a fun day.
Gill also enjoys tennis and skiing.
He is certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery after four years of fellowship. He graduated from the Boston University School of Medicine and completed his residency at the University of Virginia School of Medicine.
Gill served a spine surgery fellowship at Emory University Spine Center, and his sports medicine and arthroscopic surgery fellowships were at Steadman Hawkins Clinic in Vail in 2004 and 2005, when he worked on players for the Broncos and Rockies.
Hes an avid fan of the Boston Red Sox.
His aim for the Frisco Steadman Hawkins Clinic is to offer folks the same excellent access to care as is available in Vail.
