Working through more of the amendments on the state ballot, we encourage a yes vote on Amendment 47 and a no for numbers 48 and 50.
Amendment 47 would prohibit mandatory participation in unions. Quite simply, workers should be free to choose whether they want to participate in a union (or any other organization). What would happen, for example, if an employer insisted on donations to NOW or the NRA as a condition of employment? Why are special-interest labor organizations different?
Another argument for keeping the mandatory union dues out of paychecks is quite simple: Just because youre working for, say, a supermarket does not mean you want to join the union. In the case of a teenager bagging groceries, why should they have to pay union dues for an industry theyll soon leave behind?
Vote yes on Amendment 47.)
Amendment 48 the so-called personhood amendment is a stalking horse for a complete ban on abortions that serves no purpose other than to further divide our already divided society. Definitions for the beginning and the end of life have been argued endlessly by philosophers, religious leaders, great minds (and not-so-great minds) with no clear answer. How then can we solve these basic human issues with an Amendment to Colorados Constitution?
Amendment 50 puts forth the bright idea to fund education by allowing higher limits and longer hours for the states gambling towns. Were all for more funding for education, but not at the expense of the many unfortunate souls hooked on gambling in our state. Gambling hasnt been all that good for the gambling towns or the state lets not raise the stakes.
One member of the editorial board dissented here, saying its a relatively painless way to add to educational coffers. And as to the Itll create Las Vegas in the Rockies argument have you actually seen Central City?
