Republican presidential candidate John McCain predicted a win for himself in Colorado and across the country today at a rally in Grand Junction.
“I feel the momentum, I feel it and you feel it and we’re going to win it. We’re going to win it right here in the state of Colorado,” McCain told a crowd of more than 4,000 people huddled inside a hangar at West Star Aviation.
An average of polls on RealClearPolitics.com places Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama 5.5 percentage points ahead of McCain in Colorado. But McCain said the fight for Colorado isn’t over.
“We’re going to be up late tonight,” he said. “Some of the pundits have written us off but they may not know it but the Mac is back.”
“Get out there and vote, I need your help. Volunteer, knock on doors, get your neighbors to the polls, drag them there if you need to. We’re going to bring a real change to Washington and we need to fight for it.”
McCain said the surge and other workj in Iraq will lead to troops coming home from that country “in honor and victory,” echoed his promise to veto bills containing pork barrel project spending and told seniors not to be “afraid of the scare tactics that get trotted out every four years,” adding he would protect Medicare, social security and retirement savings accounts. He also one last “drill, baby, drill” for the campaign season.
McCain said he’ll end his campaign swinging.
“I’m an American and I chose to fight,” he closed his speech. “America is worth fighting for. Nothing is inevitable here.”
McCain spoke for less than 15 minutes before re-boarding his plane with wife Cindy McCain, mother Roberta McCain and senators Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.) and Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.). He’ll spend election night in his home state of Arizona.
