Flutist returns to Breckenridge for performance

BRECKENRIDGE — Before flutist Christina Jennings got her break in music by winning the Concert Artists Guild International Competition, she learned the fundamentals with the National Repertory Orchestra.

“It was an incredible experience to have as a young music student,” said Jennings, who was an undergrad at Juilliard when she spent the summer in Breckenridge.

The summer music festival of 1993 was Jennings’ first time in the Rocky Mountains. Three years ago she returned to Colorado for a teaching position at the University of Colorado at Boulder.

Jennings describes her life as an “amalgamation of teaching, performing and orchestra playing.”

The flutist will be joined by guitarist Jonathan Leatherwood for a concert Friday put on by the Friends of the NRO group. She said they will be playing some crowd-pleasing tangos, along with some mountain-themed pieces for the performance.

“All the pieces are so different,” she said. “Guitar and flute are such different instruments. It’s a combination people find very pleasing.”

Tickets for the concert at the Lodge at Breckenridge are $25 and include wine and dessert.
