COPPER MOUNTAIN The Copper Metro District received a big boost towards its new fire station Wednesday when Climax Molybdenum presented a $63,000 donation for the project at the Double Diamond Bar and Grill.
The donation also helped the district receive a $200,000 grant from Colorados energy impact assistance fund.
Copper is our closest neighbor and the first ones to respond to emergencies and the first ones there, said Kurt Keskimaki, Climaxs general manager. Copper and Climax will both expand, and we need a proactive fire department to support that.
The $200,000 grant would not have been possible if Climax had not donated the $63,000, said Dave Erikson, Coppers district manager.
The grant comes from severances collected from mines by the state. The fund is designated to help communities impacted by mining activities, Erikson said.
The Department of Local Affairs administers that and reviews applications ... and they wanted to see the mine contributing to the project and not just make it all assistance-impact money, he said.
The money will go toward general construction costs of the $7.5 million project approved under a November 2006 referendum by voters of the Copper metro district.
Copper Mountain Resort donated the 1.72 acres of land east of the Woodward facility for the fire station, which is set to be completed in August of 2009.
