Summit County music scene

Salem

Where and when: 9 p.m. today at The Goat Tavern in Keystone

Where’d (the band name) come from? A combination of shalom and salaam, meaning “peace.”

Home base: Boulder

Type of music: Conscious funk, jazz, hip-hop

Where they’re hot: Salem was filmed with FUEL TV Dec. 19, 2008, in Alma and has a song featured in the X Games After Party CD compilation set to release this month.

Warren Miller’s Bevin Wallace recently interviewed composer, drummer and vocalist Todd for Elevation Outdoors Magazine for the February 2009 issue.

Salem played the biggest ski and snowboard events in the world last season with EXPN’s Winter X Games, the 48 Straight King of the Mountain in Sun Valley, and U.S. Freeskiing and snowboarding events in Jackson, Copper and Girdwood, Alaska. Warren Miller has been featuring Salem music in “Off the Grid” and in trailers with Corona in last year's “Playground.”

The album: Salem has released the group’s debut studio record, "as it is above, so it is below," and it is available online at Digstation, CDBaby and will soon be available on iTunes. The album was recorded at Far & Away Studios in Boulder by Geoff Gray.

The first track, Northward, was mixed at Outkast’s Stankonia Studios by Grammy winning mix engineer and studio manager, John Frye. The album was mastered by Grammy-winning mastering engineer, David Glasser, at Airshow Mastering in Boulder.

“Green” fact: In August, Salem toured for three weeks off the grid in a vegetable-powered shuttle bus.

If your music was a tangible item, what would it be, and why? A bath. Soak and relax with your thoughts.

Why do people love ya? We are a positive group that can play well and inspire thoughts, as well as booty shakin’.

How do you keep it fresh? Improvisation is tied to our compositions at live shows.

Kanser

When: Thursday

Where: Three20south, Breckenridge

Home base: South Minneapolis

Type of music you play: We're a underground rap group from South Minneapolis; we've been around for 13-plus years.

This is all we do, and we feel we do it well.

If your music was a tangible item, what would it be, and why? I don't know what tangible means.

Why do people love ya? Cause they come to our shows on drugs.

How do you keep it fresh? Produce; we eat lots of fresh produce.

What's the craziest thing you've done? What happens on the road stays on the road.
