It was the same course, same field and nearly the same score, but, for Frisco’s Mikaela Matthews, Thursday yielded a much different result than Wednesday in the FIS North American Moguls Freestyle competition at Arapahoe Basin.
After picking up her first-career NorAm win on Day 1 of the competition, Matthews finished in fifth place on Day 2. Matthews, who skis for Team Summit, posted a score of 22.65 to miss out on back-to-back podiums by just more than one point.
Kayla Snyderman took home the top honors, followed by U.S. Team member Heather McPhie in second. Jillian Vogili finished in third.
Fellow Team Summit skier, Whitney Henceroth struggled on her run in the finals and finished in 14th place. Skiing on her home mountain, Henceroth had finished third on Day 1 and was among the overall NorAm points leaders entering the competition.
Though the women’s podium had a big shake up from Day 1 to Day 2, the men’s standings went almost unaltered.
Shane Cordeau, of Park City, Utah, topped the podium for the second straight day. Cordeau said Wednesday that he had little expectations heading into the two-day competition, because he hadn’t landed a single run in practice.
But both days, Cordeau put up the top score of the field. Thursday’s score of 24.91 beat out Jeremy Cota, who finished in third on Day 1, by a mere 0.63.
David Digravio finished in third place.
The lone Summit County skier on the men’s side, Justin Henceroth, failed to make the finals for the second straight day, finishing in 21st on Thursday.
The NorAm moguls tour consists of four stops throughout the winter at Killington, Vt.; Mount Gabriel, Quebec; Calgary, Alberta and at A-Basin.
The overall top-two finishers for both men and women receive invitations to join the U.S. Moguls Team for next season. Skiers can also earn a spot on the team through a top finish in the U.S. National Championship.
