On February 14, Kent Willis of the Summit Stage wrote to explain why taxpayers in southern Summit County pay a transit tax but do not receive transit. Kent said, “… it’s free.” It’s not free, it is funded by sales tax.
Kent said, “Personally, I would love to expand the Stage’s service to Blue River, as well as Copper, Kremmling, Leadville, Alma, Fairplay and even Eagle County.” Private business is an appropriate place to pursue inter-county transportation. If there is consumer demand, then your private business will succeed.
Kent specifically cited lack of funding, “… we simply don’t have the funding at this time to make these expansions.” I reviewed the December 2008 monthly spending as published in the January 30 Summit County Journal. $12,396 was spent on advertising (12 times per year). $12,775 was spent on printing (twice per year). Printing and advertising cost $175,000 per year and could instead fund actual transit service. Additionally, our county commissioners can allow the Summit Stage to forward-purchase fuel to lock in some of the transportation costs.
Summit Stage managers will meet at the Frisco Community Center on February 25 at 8:15 a.m. and have invited the public to participate.
