Rain poured and the course froze, but none of natures worst tricks could keep Summit County skiers Mikaela Matthews and Bruce Perry Jr. off the podium in Waterville Valley, N.H., last weekend at the Mogul Junior Olympic Championships.
And unlike the Junior Olympic fields in other disciplines of skiing, Saturday and Sundays events were a true Junior National event, Team Summit coach John Dowling said by e-mail, with the countrys top skiers making the trip to compete.
Matthews, who competes for Team Summit, skied speedy all day, Sunday in the dual moguls competition, according to Team Summit coach John Dowling. Matthews knocked off the events No. 1 seed in the second round with a slight fall due to the icy conditions in the finals while she was ahead of her opponent after the top led to a second-place finish, earning the silver medal.
The event capped off an outstanding winter for the Frisco skier, as Matthews finished the season as the No. 1-ranked junior mogul skier in the United States for the women in single moguls and was named to the U.S. Mogul Ski Team.
Lane Stoltzner, representing the Rocky Mt. Division out of Telluride, beat out Matthews in the head-to-head final for the gold medal.
In the mens single moguls on Saturday, 13-year-old Bruce Perry Jr. of Team Summit stepped up to the podium by taking third-place honors and winning the bronze medal in the J3 mens moguls. Dillons Perry Jr. skied a strong run from out of the gate to the finish with two solid aerials on the top and bottom jumps. It was Perry Jr.s second Junior Olympic medal in his first two years making the Junior Olympic team. He also finished the season as the No. 2-ranked mogul skier in the United States for 13-and-under men.
The mogul course was on steep icy run 250 meters long named True Grit. It poured rain for two days before the event which caused training to be canceled. Then conditions went from bad to worse when the temperature dropped to below freezing, causing the course to turn into a firm, steel-like texture run with ice chunks on it.
After hours and hours of coaches chopping the entire run, the course was finally ready.
With very limited training for the competitors, the course still never softened up and took down many skiers including a number of are Rocky Mountain Junior Olympic Team members.
Other Team Summit skiers results from Saturdays single moguls were Dylan Walczyk, who took 11th in the J2 mens moguls, and Ian Borgeson, who placed 25th in the J2 mens.
For the Team Summit women, Kendall Marshall skied a nice run, finishing 12th for the J3 women. Alisha Scheifley finished in 20th, Sarah Johnson in 35th and Taylor Poyfair in 36th. All three competed in the J3 womens moguls. Kaitlyn Harrell took fourth in the J4 girls for 12-and-under.
Results were reported by Bruce Perry, Sr., who served as an anouncer for the event.
