Its quite an accomplishment to be named to a Junior National Team. This honor is bestowed upon skiers whose season-long consistently produces results. Seven of the 10 15- and 16-year-olds named to the Rocky Mountain Division (RMD) team which consists of Colorado and New Mexico were Team Summit athletes.
Conor McDonald, Luc Henri Chevalier, Kegan Zorens, Ryan Messett, George Rodney, Mick Osmundsom and Bryan Hartman travelled to Aspen March 5-13 to compete in downhill (DH), super giant slalom (SG), giant slalom (GS), and slalom (SL) for the Rocky/Central Team. The three regional teams, East, West and Rocky/Central also competed for the coveted Nations Cup. The Nations Cup is awarded to the regional team which collects the most top ten finishes during the Junior Nationals. The Rocky/Central team won the cup this year for the second time in the six year history of the Junior Nationals competition.
Team Summit received some amazing performances by all the athletes in this incredibly tough field. said Doug Elsey, Team Summits head ability coach.
McDonald led the team with strong performances in all events and was third in the overall competition. An athlete must have finished the DH, GS and SL to be considered for the overall title. McDonald placed 18th in DH, 23rd in SG, 13th in GS and fifth in SL.
Chevalier posted excellent results as well. He was 12th in the DH and third in the SG.
Skiing with a week old reconstructed hand in a cast custom fit to grip his pole, Messett persevered for impressive results. He had a 38th in DH and a 5th in GS.
Rodney skied well and added points to the Nations Cup pursuit by placing 29th in SG and ninth in SL. Zorens became more confident as the week progressed. He accomplished a substantial feat by finishing all four races, not many in the field can claim similar success. Zorens placed 48th in DH, 30th in SG, 28th in GS and 16th in SL.
Hartman showed his strength in the speed events by placing 34th in DH and 41st in SG.
Osmundson also finished all four races which takes enormous effort and focus. He was 52nd in DH, 34th in SG, 30th in GS and 21st in SL.
McDonald, Zorens, Rodney and Osmundsom all have the chance to earn the opportunity to do it again next year.
