The Summit Lake Dillon Optimist Club hosted its annual spring oratorical contest for local youths on April 22 and 23, with 30 student speakers discussing what optimism means to them.
Club members judged the speeches on content and presentation to determine the winners.
The first-place boy was Peter Camaano of Breckenridge Elementary School, and the first-place girl was Bailey Radek of Summit Cove Elementary School. Both competed at the state level on April 25 in Castle Rock.
Neither student placed in the finals to move on to the next level of competition.
Optimist International is one of the world’s largest service club organizations with 120,000 adult and youth members in 3,800 clubs in the United States, Canada, the Caribbean and Mexico — and throughout the world.
The Optimist Oratorical Contest is one of the organization’s most popular programs, with more than 2,000 clubs participating annually. Carrying the motto “Bringing Out the Best in Kids,” Optimists conduct positive service projects that reach more than 6 million young people each year.
