SILVERTHORNE -- The ninth annual Safe Summer Kick Off has changed venues so it can accommodate everyone. The free event, which normally has between 1,000 and 1,500 people show up, is scheduled for June 6 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and will be held at Silverthorne Elementary School this year.

The event “has outgrown the Silverthorne Pavillion,” said Silverthorne Police Department Sgt. Amy Noraka. “The elementary has a little more room and more parking for everyone.”

Each local agency that deals with safety brings something to the event and promotes safety for kids in its own way.

“We want to make sure kids are safe out there this summer,” Noraka said. “This is a great event to promote safety as summer begins.”

During the event there will be free giveaways of bike/skateboarding helmets, reflectors, water bottles, fishing poles, safety booklets and other safety equipment. There will also be free fingerprinting for children, helmet decorating, a bike rodeo, music and a chance to tour emergency service vehicles and equipment — like fire trucks and ambulances.

“Younger kids might have more fun, but there are giveaways that would benefit kids through junior high and high school,” Noraka said.

There will also be a car-seat inspection area to check for proper fit and safety by certified technicians. With a donation, new car seats will be available.

Winners of the essay contest, questions for which were passed out to every teacher in the county, should all have been notified this year via mail and will need to show up at the event to pick up their new bikes.

The event is sponsored by the Silverthorne Police Department and other emergency service agencies in Summit County. It is funded through donations given by individuals and businesses throughout the county such as VR360 Vail Resorts, Wal-Mart, CME and the Big Red Bus. “It could only happen with support from agencies and donations from the community,” Noraka said.

For more information, contact the Silverthorne Police Department at (970) 262-7320.

Before the event there will also be a fishing derby held at Trent Park in Silverthorne. That event starts at 9 a.m. and is open to kids 14 and under.
