SCBA making donations

The Summit County Builders Association (SCBA) is again sending building materials to help others in need. From 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., on June 11, SCBA members will gather usable construction goods at the Frisco Wal-Mart for shipment to Bowie, Texas, a town hard hit by fires and floods.

Located in Montague County, in northern Texas, Bowie is a rodeo and fishing community of a little over 5,000 residents.

SCBA donations chairperson Merle Klocke, vice president of the Alpine Bank in Frisco, said this year’s effort builds on three previous drives, the first was New Orleans’ Hurricane Katrina, followed by a devastating tornado in Holly, a farming town in southeast Colorado in 2007. Two truckloads of materials where delivered to Holly in 2007 and 2008.

Transportation of the materials is made possible by Wal-Mart, according to Klocke, who says the discount chain provides two trucks, drivers and fuel for the 800-mile trek.

In a change from previous donation drives, the SCBA is asking locals to give usable furniture and appliances, while the contractors will provide excess construction materials. The one exception: paint will not be accepted.

Klocke may be contacted at (970) 513-5940 and email merleklocke@alpinebank.com, and SCBA President Clark Johnson of Apex Mountain Homes at (970) 668-3402 and clark@apexmountainhomes.com
