OGALLALA, Neb. — Investigators are trying to determine what caused a speedboat to flip at Lake McConaughy, killing a Colorado man and injuring his family.
The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission's Dennis Thompson says the 28-foot boat was speeding across the center of the Western Nebraska reservoir when the accident happened Saturday afternoon.
Four people in the boat were ejected when it flipped and broke into pieces.
Fisherman in the area reacted quickly and helped pull people from the water, but the father died at the scene from his injuries.
The mother and two children, a 15-year-old girl and a 9-year-old boy, were taken to an Ogallala hospital. Their injuries are not considered life threatening.
Authorities have not identified the family, but say they are from Parker. Game and Parks officials did not immediately respond to messages left Sunday.
Thompson said the only person in the boat wearing a life jacket was the 9-year-old boy. The mother and daughter clung to floating boat seats to remain afloat after the accident.
But Thompson said neither alcohol nor weather was a factor in the accident.
