Summer music revs up

Uncertain Frequency mixes it up

Who: Uncertain Frequency

When: 7 p.m. today and 2 p.m. Saturday

Where: Bagali's, Breckenridge

Where'd the name come from? The name “Uncertain Frequency” is a work in progress. We'll use it until something better comes along.

Home base: All over Summit County.

Type of music: funk, jazz, fusion and Zappa.

If your music were a tangible item, what would it be, and why? A leaky faucet. We're going to require professional assistance to shut us off.

Why do people love ya? We have great shows because we love what we play and we're all great musicians, so we're secretly having a conversation through our instruments while we play.

How do you keep it fresh? We are rooted in improvisation, jazz and jamming, so even though all our material sounds structured (especially the Zappa material), we are constantly adjusting the arrangements and meddling with the format. Plus, we also like flying by the seat of our pants by playing music that we've learned within the same 24-hour time period.

What's your weird quirk? At Bagali's we play straight-ahead jazz standards for half the night, then we switch it over to the funk/groove and fusion stuff so people are kinda shocked to hear us open our second set with booty-shaking funk!

Get your morning music fix

Who: Automelodic

When: 9:30 a.m. Saturday

Where: Howling Coyote Coffee, Summit Cove

Where'd the name come from? The concept of coming up with melodies improvisationally while playing and attempting to be melodic at the same time.

Home base: Summit County

Type of music: jazz, fusion and Latin standards

If your music were a tangible item, what would it be, and why? A bowl of spaghetti — sometimes we get a little “noodley.”

Why do people love ya? We provide a relaxing yet energetic style of music that is somewhat rare in Summit County.

How do you keep it fresh? Huge selection of repertoire to choose from. We encourage musicians to “sit in” with us.

What's the craziest thing you've done/weirdest experience? Trying to play this music in the morning before we're awake is pretty crazy if you ask me! We'll be having quad-espresso drinks throughout the performance!

RWB gets bluesy at the Snake

Who: RWB

When: Saturday night

Where: Snake River Saloon, Keystone

Where'd the name come from? Named the band when we were 13.

Home base: Parker, Colo.

Type of music: Rocky bluesy jam

Why do people love ya? The music is fresh.

How do you keep it fresh? Playin' new songs.

What's the craziest thing you've done/weirdest experience? Made the decision to become a full-time musician.

Powerhouse funk-rock sizzles the Snake

Who: Absylom Rising

When: Thursday night

Where: Snake River Saloon, Keystone

Where'd Absylom Rising come from: In the days before time began, the slumbering phoenix rose from the ashes of The Emu Posse to give birth to it's illegitimate love child, the irreverent rock outfit named Absylom Rising.

Home base: North Mississippi

Type of music: Savannah's Connect calls Absylom Rising “powerhouse funk-rock from Mississippi known for vocal harmonies and high-energy improv.”

If your music were a tangible item, what would it be, and why? Our music is like Gold Bond Extra-Medicated Powder, because it feels like a thousand fairies giving butterfly kisses to your taint!

Why do people love ya? Southern accents!

How do you keep it fresh? On this tour our good friend and fellow musician Brad Porter joins the band on Latin percussion for seven shows here in Colorado. That'll mix it up a bit!

What's the craziest thing you've done/weirdest experience? We can't tell you, and you couldn't print it if we did, so we're just gonna go with trippin' under the interstate outside a club in Knoxville parked next to a Christian outreach group that gave out free hot dogs to drunks after the bars closed. It was weird.
