An engaged couple recently driving south from Breckenridge on Colorado 9 at midnight may wish they didn't try to help an erratic driver who crashed on the road's shoulder.

The couple first noticed the SUV driving wildly and flashing its lights behind them near Goose Pasture Tarn. The vehicle blasted by them at high speed before passing another vehicle.

The male fiance called the police to report the reckless driving and came upon the crash scene moments later. He stopped to check on the occupants and found an intoxicated female exiting the driver's seat, according to SCSO.

When he asked the woman whether she was OK, she asked whether he was a cop. He said no. When he asked her name, she again asked whether he was a cop.

A man then emerged from the passenger seat and said to the the fiance who stopped to help: “You're a cop.”

The fiance replied that he was making a citizen's arrest of the driver. The man from the passenger seat told him, “I'll ------- kill you,” according to the fiance's statement to SCSO.

The man from the SUV charged him and slammed him against the SUV — punching him once in the temple and twice in the jaw, according to the fiance's statement.

A third person then emerged from the SUV and took off running.

The engaged couple returned to their vehicle and drove away, again calling 911 — this time to report the accident and assault.

An Alma officer later visited the address to which the SUV was registered and contacted the man who matched the engaged couple's description.

It must not have gone well: The officer “ended up deploying his pepper spray and Taser to control (the man),” according to SCSO.

When deputies caught up with the man at a local hospital, he said he didn't remember the accident or the fights with the male fiance and one of the other passengers -- who said the man head-butted him earlier in the day.

The man had a bloody nose, scratched arms and knee, marks on his knuckles and marks from the Taser probe.

Once he was medically cleared, the man was arrested with charges of third degree assault and menacing.

Deputies give sprawling hitcher a lift

A man found lying on the southbound lane of Colorado 9 in the Breckenridge area — hoping to get a ride to his girlfriends house — scored a lift with a detour to Summit County Jail.

When deputies found him, the man who “exhibited several signs of high intoxication” said he was hitching a ride to an “unknown address south of Breckenridge,” according to a report from Summit County Sheriff's Office.

A portable test measured the horizontal hitchhiker's blood alcohol content at a whopping 0.240 breath-alcohol concentration.

After finding that a warrant was out on the man regarding “driving while impaired,” deputies arrested him on charges including “pedestrian intoxicated on a roadway,” according to the report.

Screamer does not deter deputies

Deputies reporting to a report of a fight last weekend knocked on the home's door to find a minor holding a beer bottle. That person screamed, ran up the stairs and screamed some more.

The deputies entered the residence because of “exigent circumstances” and noticed several people fleeing out the back door, according to a report from SCSO.

As one of the deputies reached the top of the stairs, a man was seen emptying his pockets of some marijuana and paraphernalia on the kitchen counter. The man “apologized profusely” and said that he was out on bond regarding methamphetamine and pain killers.

The minor and another minor who was met on the driveway were given summonses regarding under-aged drinking.
