I feel as a practicing dentist in Summit County since 1963 I must respond to Mr. Lefeber's June 29 letter in the Summit Daily. Perhaps prior to his next letter of misinformation, he will check for science-based facts from reputable sources other then junk science websites.
With minimal effort, there are multiple sources to check the safety and effectiveness of optimal fluoride in the drinking water system. The optimal fluoride level should be limited to .7-1.2 ppm (parts per million). The Climax Mine had a concentration of 10-13 ppm when housing was still at the mine site. The teeth of the children raised at the mine site showed mottling, i.e. brown spotting in the enamel. From personal experience I can tell you those teeth were stronger then a blacksmith's anvil.
Multiple scientifically controlled studies have fluoride in optimal levels effective in reducing tooth decay by 20-40 percent. More then 100 health organizations endorse the use of community water fluoridation in controlled levels. Water fluoridation is available in approximately 60 countries benefiting over 405 million.
