Two teenagers could face steep penalties after an auto accident in Silverthorne last week where the driver was allegedly huffing canned air.
Last Wednesday, Jaime Lee Egger and an unnamed juvenile crashed her aunt's Ford Windstar van outside the Silverthorne Recreation Center. According to a report filed by the Silverthorne Police Department, the van struck and destroyed a stop sign, a large pine tree and several aspen as it careened along the grass path between the rec center and nearby Rainbow Park. The report says there were tire marks for about 200 feet from northbound Rainbow Drive to where the van eventually stopped.
An eyewitness said the van was moving so fast when it left Rainbow Drive that it was airborne for 30 to 40 feet. He estimated the van was traveling about 45-50 mph along Rainbow Drive before the crash.
The report also states fire personnel found a prescription bottle containing a “leafy green substance” on the van's front seat. Officer Anne Baldwin, who wrote the report, said she tested the substance and found it to be marijuana. Another officer found a can of Office Max-brand canned air between the two front seats.
According to the report, Egger said she and the passengers (all unidentified because they are juveniles) were heading back from the rec center after Egger had dropped them off at a class. Another witness, also a juvenile, said they saw Egger inhaling from the Office Max can. Baldwin placed Egger under arrest for driving under the influence of drugs after Egger consented to roadside testing.
“While on scene I could see that Egger was confused and disoriented,” Baldwin wrote. “I repeated numerous commands to sit and she remained standing or shuffling while often staring at the ground . ..She slurred when speaking to me, her physical movements were unusually slow, and often used her friend or nearby vehicles to stand.”
Egger was arrested and charged with eight different misdemeanor crimes. She is due in court on Aug. 10 and could face a sentence of up to 18 months in jail, according to Deputy District Attorney Anne Francis.
