Grab your finest mining get-up and get down to Beaver Run Resort, where the National Repertory Orchestra hosts its 50th birthday party, in conjunction with the Breck150.

Besides food, music and dancing to the NRO, one of the evening's highlights are Don Sahli's paintings of NRO rehearsals last year, which will be available at the silent auction.

Sahli is an American painter based in Evergreen, who teaches the Russian School of Impressionism. He was the last apprentice to the famous Russian colorist Sergei Bongart. Through Bongart, Sahli learned to paint not by formula but by truly seeing the relationship of color, form and design in nature. Now, his artwork uses both dramatic and subtle colors, with heavy textured brushstrokes and soft fluid washes.

Sahli spent four days last July attending and painting NRO rehearsals. He captured the conductor and string section in one painting, the harps in another, piano in still another. Two larger pieces portraying the orchestra are 20x24” and the two smaller works measure 20x16”.

“As I painted I felt inspired,” Sahli said. “I had hoped for — dreamed about — painting the NRO, and here I was doing it. It is an honor to be an artist supporting other artists.”

With his paintings, Sahli strives to take the viewer — and himself — back to the scene.

“I want it to convey the drama and emotion that first captured my attention — the atmosphere and the soul of the place,” he said. “This is the goal of my work — to go past just the image to touch the viewer in a way that evokes emotion.”

Tickets are $50. Costume rentals are available, so guests have no excuse not to enter the historic costume contest.
