BRECKENRIDGE — The Breckenridge site for Colorado Mountain College — on schedule for the Aug. 29 grand opening — contains an array of energy efficiencies and technology-friendly resources.

The $14 million, 34,000 square-foot project allows the CMC Summit Campus to “offer courses in ways we were not able to in the past,” said CMC vice president and Summit Campus CEO Alton Scales.

There's an interactive video room connecting the campus to others across the CMC chain; a kitchen equipped with industrial-style stoves, ovens and soup kettles; and a 24-station science lab complete with glass-enclosed vent system for more volatile experiments.

Scales said bus stops for Summit Stage and Breckenridge Free Ride will be in place to transport people to the building near Highway 9 on Coyne Valley Road by fall semester. The stops are made possible through a road-building partnership among CMC, Summit County and the town of Breckenridge, he said.

A few steps inside the structure's main entrance, a flat-screen monitor will display how much current the roof-mounted, photovoltaic solar panels are generating. Scales said energy use will further be stemmed through the lobby's large, strategically designed windows.

“This room is awash of natural lighting,” he said.

The nearby cyber cafe, loaded with power plugs and near the kitchen, is to be open to the public as well as students.

The 240-seat auditorium includes broadcast-quality lighting — and a $50,000 Bosendorfer grand piano donated by Eileen and Paul Finkel.

Occupancy-sensing lights throughout the building are intended to cut down on wasted energy. As one walks through the doorway of the mail room, for example, the lights immediately come on.

The mail room lights shut off after five minutes of inactivity, while the bathroom lights stay on for 10 minutes.

Compact fluorescent bulbs and strategically placed skylights further contribute to the building's eco-friendly designs.

The “Prodigy Room” boasts three SMART Boards, each on a different wall. The interactive, computerized whiteboards are a technology envied by teachers worldwide.

“Research shows front-row students have higher GPAs. We can create three front rows,” Scales said of the room.

As the project nears completion, Scales said there are already plans to add a residence hall.

“We're really ripe for a residence hall,” he said, adding that one of the first questions potential students ask is whether housing is offered.

People with CMC are already talking with builders, and the goal is to have the residence hall under way within two years.
