Skate comp Saturday in Silverthorne

The Silverthorne Skatepark will be filled with kickflips and ollies, Saturday, as the rec center will host the ninth annual SK8 Over 8,000 ft. skateboarding competition.

“It's a great thing for our youth community members who are skateboarders,” said Mindy Nicholds, the sports and athletics coordinator at the center.

Registration for the comp is at 9 a.m., an hour before the action gets under way.

The competition is broken down into four divisions: beginner, intermediate, advanced and women's. Nicholds said that in past years, the competition has drawn 40-50 skaters from Summit County and the Front Range, and she expects the same this year.

Helping put on the competition are Cordell Crosby and Giri Watts, who help coach the rec center's summer skate camps. Angus Morrison, who now works with the Breckenridge Recreation Center after many years in Silverthorne, will lend his talents on the day by acting as the MC.

“It's nice to have these role models helping out with this for the younger people,” Nicholds said.

Nicholds also added that the skate comp would likely not be possible if it weren't for the events sponsors The Grind, Levitate and Never Summer.

The competition fee for skaters is $15, and all competitors under the age of 18 must have a parent-signed waiver. In addition to paying their entry into the contest, the first 40 skaters to register get T-shirts, and a raffle will be held.

Helmets with chin straps are required to compete, and pads are strongly encouraged.

“The competition is not the time for learning new tricks, but the time for showing off what you already know,” Nicholds said, noting that safety is a primary issue for the event staff.

Besides holding its annual competition, the Silverthorne Recreation Center also hosts four skate camps throughout the summer. The next available camp begins Monday. The week-long camp offers instructional opportunities to both beginner- and intermediate-level skaters. Spots in the camp are still available.
