SUMMIT COUNTY — Hands-on training for prospective online businesses entrepreneurs will be available this fall with virtual classes through Colorado Mountain College.
“This is the real deal,” said instructor Robert Cartelli with the CMC Summit Campus. “It's for people who want to change their lives.”
The first 3-credit-hour courses — Introduction to E-business and Management of Information Systems — are offered this fall as part of 12-credit-hour certificates through CMC's entrepreneurship program.
Cartelli said he instructed the founder of www.vermontcountry
gourmet.com, a Vermont store converted to an online business five years ago.
He also helped get www.raceskis.com started 10 years ago. The online store is based in the sleepy town of Jay, Maine.
“It's like Alma, and they sell more race skis than anybody else on the planet because that's what we focused on,” Cartelli said.
By the time students have completed the roughly one-year CMC program, some will have already started their own online businesses, he said in a CMC press release.
“They'll register their domain names, build their online store and watch the orders come in,” he said in the press release.
The virtual classrooms make the courses available to students living anywhere with a reliable Internet connection. Cartelli said the students collaborate using such programs as Google Documents to collaborate in real time.
Students enrolled in the CMC program will use e-commerce software from www.volusion.com — the site used by both John McCain and Barack Obama for their presidential campaign stores.
“Now it's time to make it real,” Cartelli said of the new classes. “There's nothing more real than a U.S. presidential campaign. I hope it's as fascinating for the students as it is for me.”
Cartelli holds a master's of science in strategic technology management from Marlboro College in Brattleboro, Vt. He also teaches a management information systems course for master's of business administration students in the Middle East and India for the University of Wales.
Other CMC classes taught by Cartelli include business, management and marketing.
