Twenty-six years ago last month, a beautiful young woman whom we have never met, touched and changed our family forever in a profound way. Alone, unmarried and pregnant, she faced the agonizing dilemma about what to do with the tiny hidden life growing inside of her. Her predicament wasn't a catastrophic disease, illness or even a threat to her health. Rather it was a dilemma of heart.
Our Senate is now considering a massive “Health Care Reform” bill which would result in federally mandated coverage of abortion on demand, and taxpayer-funded abortion as a method of birth control for women facing a crisis of the heart like our son's birth mother.
In his speech to the Planned Parenthood Action Fund in July of 2008, President Obama stated that, in his mind “ ‘reproductive care' is essential, basic care, so it is at the center, the heart of the (health care) plan that I propose.” When asked for clarification later, an Obama spokesman said that “reproductive care included abortion.” If his Health Care reform passes without an express ban on abortions, then the American people will be forced to directly pay for abortions for years to come.
President Obama campaigned that he was trying to “reduce the number of abortions.” Yet statistics show that taxpayer-funding for abortion only increases the number of abortions performed. Even pro-choice supporters admit that abortions could increase by 25 percent among those eligible for government health care, if we taxpayers are forced to pay for abortions.
Many of those who don't consider abortion as a grave breach of the Fifth Commandment — “Thou shall not kill” — do oppose government (taxpayer) funded abortion. A November, 2008 Zogby poll showed that 71 percent of the public SAID NO when asked if a bill requiring employers to provide health insurance to their employees “should require insurance plans to pay for abortions when the abortions are performed as a method of birth control.” This overwhelming public opinion may be one reason why the Democratic leadership is attempting to rush through the health reform legislation. In fact, President Obama has already begun pushing through this frightening legislation, beginning with a bill recently brought to a vote in the House. H.R. 3170, harmlessly and deceivingly named the “Financial Appropriations Bill, ” will use our tax dollars to pay for abortions in Washington, D.C.
As a Catholic Christian, I support the “common ground provisions” proposed by Republican leaders which include: “... health reform that maintains current law provisions regarding restrictions on federal funding of abortion services, restricts federal funds from flowing to abortion providers, and DOES NOT IMPOSE MANDATES EITHER ON INSURANCE CARRIERS OR MEDICAL PROVIDERS TO PARTICIPATE IN ACTIVITIES THAT VIOLATE THEIR RELIGIOUS AND MORAL BELIEFS.” (emphasis mine).
We don't know the pressures and advice our son's birth mother encountered from family or friends. We do know she made a difficult, loving and selfless decision: to not only give life to her child, but to give him life in a home with both a father and mother who were longing and ready to be parents. Perhaps if she lived in this country at a time when abortion was promoted by our president and leaders, condoned by our culture, and federally funded, there would be one less wonderful human being in our family and our world.
If you are concerned about unnecessary, non-health-related funding mandates being surreptitiously packaged into this health reform bill and/or if you believe in the inherent right and equal dignity of every member of the human family: mother, father and unborn child, please take a few minutes to contact President Obama, and our elected officials. Google The Susan B. Anthony List or go to www.sba-list.org for detailed information about this critical issue as well as simple, easy ways to contact our president, senators and representatives. Many lives depend upon your voice, your time and your action.
