Summit County Weekly Fishing Report

Despite some recent heavy rains that muddied up some of the area's streams, conditions in and around Summit County are back to normal. That is to say, conditions are back to being great.

“The Colorado (River) had been effected pretty bad — more so than some others, but it's now back to what it should be,” said Adam Morgan of Cutthroat Anglers in Silverthorne. “ ... Everything is still fishing really well.”

Morgan added that the conditions right now, especially in Silverthorne, allow anglers to pick and choose what they want to go after.

“It all depends on if you want quality or quantity,” he said.

Those looking to catch some top trout should look below the Dillon Reservoir on the Blue River, Morgan said, as the areas close to the dam have produced some tremendous fish in recent weeks.

Anglers looking to snag a slew of fish — which Morgan said is most people — can head a little farther down the river closer to the Green Mountain Reservoir.

“That's probably the best in town, over there by Green Mountain,” Morgan said.

Morgan said that caddis are beginning to draw consistent strikes in that region, and both stimulators and hopper-dropper combinations are strong as well.

“We are using lots of hopper-droppers,” Morgan said. “That's kind of our go-to rig right now.”

In addition, yellow sallies have been hitting well in the region as of late, and green drakes are starting to be found on some rivers.

Coming up, Morgan said Cutthroat Anglers is really looking forward to the trico season. Some tricos have already been spotted on the Colorado, but not enough to draw fish to the surface, Morgan said.

While conditions on the Blue, Colorado and Arkansas all are prime, Morgan said local anglers are looking forward to what should be a great fall.

“Because of all the early runoff and the late start to the season, we're looking for the fall to be outstanding,” Morgan said. “The high water helps the rivers quite a bit; it cleans them out and helps to disperse bug life.”

The high waters have also helped Cutthroat's float-guiding, which they take trips on both the Colorado and Arkansas.

“That's out bread and butter,” Morgan said of the float trips.

Overall, Morgan sees little trouble for anglers looking to catch some trout, right now.

“Conditions are good, and the water levels keep on dropping,” he said.

Cutthroat Anglers is located off Highway 9 in Silverthorne. The shop can be found online at www.fishcolorado.com.
