John M. Kunst Jr.: Happy about school improvements in Park County

My wife and I are property owners in Fairplay where we will soon have a new residence and thus be closer to our two children and four grandchildren, all of whom reside either in Fairplay or Alma.

We were delighted to hear about the Park County Re-2 school district's efforts to land a BEST Grant that will allow for the building of new and greatly needed physical facilities for the education of Park County's youth. Better than an X-Box or any computer game, the gift of an education to our children is more meaningful and lasting than other material expressions of love. Nothing lasts as long as the sound fundamentals of a good education which are better learned in pleasant, attractive and efficient surroundings.

My wife and I are, by nature, conservative and don't often appreciate any government entity seeking to wring more out of our pocketbooks for questionable social services. However, over the years we have come to appreciate that good schools are the community's best and most productive asset. When a community graduates students with good learning skills, its reputation grows and more people become interested in moving to a good school system where their children can learn and thrive. When these good schools attract young parents to the community, property values increase throughout the county.

In hard economic times, the BEST Grant offers all residents of Park County the opportunity to improve the value of their property. Even though my wife and I can't vote for the bond issue on the November ballot, I look forward to paying the new tax, improving our schools and adding to the value of our property. Current school buildings are adequate at best, but deteriorating rapidly. How much more incentive do we need than 50 cents on the dollar?
