Mayor Gary Goettelman: Vote ‘yes' for Park County schools

The Town of Alma Board of Trustees is extremely pleased that the Colorado State Board of Education has approved the Park County Re-2 Building Excellent Schools Today (BEST) grant application for 50 percent state funding. The Alma Board of Trustees would like to endorse Ballot question 3A.

The BEST grant is a very unique opportunity. The state will pay 50 percent of the total $30 million cost for the school district to build new facilities. These state funds are contingent upon the passage of a local school bond election to raise the other half of the funds. If the bond fails, the school district will lose these state funds and it is very unlikely that they will be able to receive a 50 percent state grant again.

The tax increase for the district's 50 percent share of the project will be approximately 3.3 mills. The residential homeowner will see a tax increase of approximately $2.50 per month ($30 per year) per $100,000 of home value. The commercial owner will see a tax increase of approximately $9.60 per month ($115 per year) per $100,000 of commercial value. These costs are minimal when you consider the long-term benefits to the local economies and our children's education from having modern green built school facilities.

The Colorado Department of Education conducted an audit in March and determined that the Lake George Charter School and most of the buildings on the Fairplay campus need to be replaced. Major portions of our facilities are over 45 years old. Edith Teter Elementary School is 129 years old.

Voting yes on Ballot question 3A is an investment opportunity in our communities and children that must be taken advantage of. Visit www.bestforsouthparkschools.com for election information and registration forms.
