Summit slips up at Conifer

It started early for the Summit High football team at Conifer on Friday. Opening the game with the ball, the Tigers fumbled a snap on the third play from scrimmage, giving Conifer the ball at the Summit 14-yard line.

The mistake turned into seven points for the home team, and a few more Tiger mishaps added up to a 30-6 loss for Summit.

“We can't do that against good teams,” SHS head coach Dylan Hollingsworth said of his team's costly mistakes.

Three turnovers from the Tiger offense added up to 21 points for Conifer in the battle of conference rivals.

Though the mistakes were costly, Hollingsworth said his team ultimately got outworked by a more physical team.

“They were very physical up front and they were really prepared to play,” the coach said. “They really were able to execute in what they were doing.”

Given a disadvantage in field position on nearly every Conifer scoring drive, the Tiger defense still put forth a strong effort on the night. Both junior Michael Daigle and senior Mike Daniels snagged interceptions for Summit, with Daniels making some critical tackles as well.

Hollingsworth also praised the play of his two senior outside linebackers, Cody Thomas and Rick Dreyer, who played well against Conifer's dive-option attack.

“They really played great for us,” the coach said.

The score may have been lopsided by the finish, but the Tigers had several chances to get on the scoreboard early. But each time, Summit players were thwarted back by Conifer's dominating defensive line.

The Tigers got their only points of the night on a 12-yard touchdown pass from senior Sam Dudick to Daniels, but it wasn't enough to ignite a Summit comeback.

Hollingsworth said Dreyer had a “fantastic” night rushing the ball for the Tigers, though statistics were not available at time of print.

Now, the Tigers (4-4) will likely have to win their remaining two games to have a shot of reaching the state playoffs.

Summit plays Evergreen at 7 p.m. at home Friday, with a final game the following week against an opponent yet to be determined.

“We've just got to get things together for next week and concentrate on Evergreen,” Hollingsworth said.
