Halloween is a time to let your creativity run rampant and try on a persona, or two. And, Summit County gives you plenty of places to show off your latest dark (or shiny) shadow, whether you're a kid or an adult. Here's a lineup of Halloween happenings, but make sure you look through the ads to thoroughly plan your night.
Breckenridge and beyond
At the Park Avenue Pub, doors open at 5 p.m., and DC starts DJing at 9 p.m. There's a $250 cash prize for best Halloween costume. Runner up and other prizes will also be awarded.Le Petit Paris will award first, second and third prize to winners of its costume contest.
Napper Tandy's is having a DJ and costume contest Saturday night.
Dance the night away with DJ Crisp at The Gold Pan Saloon. The costume contest starts at 9 p.m.
DJ Sheboygun will be at Jake's Dive Bar from 9:30 p.m. Jake's will have prizes for the best costumes at midnight, with plenty of giveaways and drink specials.
Burke & Riley's Irish Pub will be filled with vampires Friday night and '80s icons Saturday. No contests, just a party.
three20south starts its celebration tonight with Denver jam band Yamn, who will play music of the 1980s, from Van Halen to Madonna. Tickets are $10. Saturday, Summit County's High 5 plays psychedelic jam rock. A costume contest boasts a grand prize of a six-month, non-transferable season pass to three20south.
The first Breckenridge Scavenger Hunt, a free event, takes place from 8-11 p.m. Saturday. Search the streets and historic sites of Breckenridge in teams of two to score the most clues and points. Costumes are a must. Visit foreverfitcouples.com and fill out the information.
Carvers Ski Board & Sport is hosting a pumpkin carving contest today. Creatively carve the pumpkin at home, then bring it to Carvers no later than 4 p.m. First prize wins a Burton blunt snowboard, second, a pair of Salomon snowboard boots and third wins a Dakine heli pro pack.
Alma's Only Bistro is kickin' it up with Strive Roots from 9:30 p.m. to 2 a.m. A costume contest sometime in the later evening, will take place, with cash prizes of $200 to $50. Cover of $10 includes free pizza and door prizes every hour.
Frisco
Upstairs at Johnny G's hosts its 2009 Halloween Bash with fresh and old school hip-hop with DJ Baker, starting at 9 p.m. At midnight, compete for a Copper Mountain season pass, $100 cash or $100 bar tab at midnight.The Luv Brothers will be at Ollies in Frisco, cranking out a spooky bluegrass show at 9 p.m.
Dillon
Dillon Dam Brewery is starting Halloween early, with a 5:30 p.m. costume contest Saturday, followed by door prizes and a ghoulish good time.Pug Ryan's is having a Halloween Bash with Arnie J. Green from 9 p.m. to midnight.
Keystone
Dewey Paul Band plays at the Goat Soup & Whiskey Tavern from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. Saturday. The Snake River Saloon holds its annual costume contest at 11 p.m. Best female costume wins an A-Basin pass, and best guy costume wins a PBR longboard. Money Shot will be performing.
Kid friendly haunts
Elks Lodge in Silverthorne (across the street from Sears) is hosting a haunted house today and Saturday from 6-10 p.m. All proceeds go to youth charity. The hauntings are not appropriate for children younger than 5. For more information, call (970) 389-1262.Take a guided tour of Breckenridge's Nationally Recognized Historic District and learn about the eerie and unexplained stories of the past. Breckenridge and Upper Blue schools present the Halloween Carnival at the Breckenridge Recreation Center from 4:30-8:30 p.m. today. Visit the Pirates of the Scare-ibbean haunted cave and jump around in bouncy houses.
Dillon Valley Elementary presents its 29th annual Halloween Carnival from 1-4 p.m. Saturday. It includes kids' games, food, a haunted house, a silent auction, a preschool room and great food.
Summit Cove Elementary hosts its 14th annual Halloween Carnival from 5:30-8 p.m. today. It includes a silent auction, food, a preschool room and fun booths.
Frisco invites all ghouls, goblins, witches and princesses to join the town for a night of safe tricks and treats this Halloween, on Main Street from Madison to 7th Avenue. In addition to candy galore, Frisco is teaming up with Mountain Mentors and Activities Run by Youth to bring the County's only Haunted House.
Frisco's Haunted House (recommended for ages 7 and up) comes alive from 6-10 p.m. Friday and Saturday in the Recreation Building at 110 3rd Avenue. Cost for students is $5 and for adults, $7. Proceeds benefit A.R.B.Y. and Mountain Mentors. Call (970) 668-5547 for more information.
Saturday, trick-or-treaters can help themselves to all the sweets they can handle at businesses up and down Main Street and in the Frisco Historic Park. For little feet needing a rest, cartoons will play in the Historic Park Log Chapel. Look for the bright orange jack-o-lanterns hanging outside Main Street businesses that have candy to dole out from 6-8 p.m., Saturday. (Reminder to drivers: Main Street will be closed to all vehicles between Seventh and Madison Avenues from 5:30-8:30 p.m.)
