SUMMIT COUNTY — Bar owners this Halloween can keep the booze flowing an extra hour because daylight saving time ends Sunday at 2 a.m.

Most owners of bars with special events this Halloween say they'll stay open if patrons stick around.

“We'll probably play it by ear,” said James Forston, bartender and assistant manager at The Goat Soup and Whiskey Tavern in Keystone.

Local law enforcers plan to have extra officers on duty to watch for trick or treaters' safety as well as crimes in progress, but they're not encouraging bars to close early.

Breckenridge Police Chief Rick Holman said there was a recent meeting with most of the town's late-night establishments where most said they planned to use the extra hour to “jump on that opportunity” during a time when business has been slower.

“We didn't discourage them from doing that,” he said.

Meanwhile, Boulder police and city officials are asking bars to shut down early as they brace for what could be a wild night of mass partying after a big University of Colorado home game.

Summit County Sheriff John Minor said his office may have an additional patrol car Saturday evening, but that there's not much concern regarding the extra-late night.

Motherloaded Tavern owner Chmurny Cain said her bar will certainly use the extra time.

“We're going to stay open an extra hour — why wouldn't we?” she said.

Three20south owner Matthew Karukin said he was once at a bar in Leadville that stayed open an hour later during the end of daylight saving and “that's when everything got weird.”

“If the crowd is behaving and the band wants to keep going, then we'll keep it going,” he said.

The Gold Pan in Breckenridge and Bootleggers in Dillon also have plans to remain open the extra hour if customers are there.
