This morning when I woke up, I looked out the window to see a forest that once was green with life and now is brown and dead. I went for a morning walk, but instead of breathing fresh air, I was choked by the exhaust pouring out of Mack trucks, cement mixers and trash trucks. I came home and opened the newspaper to read about how 46 ski resorts in Europe could not open in 2006 because of lack of snow. I saw that there was a ski resort on sale for less than $1 in Sweden. I continued reading about vanishing glaciers across the globe, island nations becoming submerged, and how scientists believe the North Pole could lose all its summer ice by 2050, dooming the polar bear to extinction.
If you throw a frog into a bucket of boiling water, he will jump out immediately, but if you warm the water gradually the frog will stay in it until he dies. Our planet is warming so gradually, that many don't see an urgent need to reverse the process. Yet all around us ecosystems are dying because of our collective lack of action. I sometimes agree with the bumper sticker that states: “Human beings aren't the only species on the planet. They just act like they are.”
Here are two simple and easy things to do to help fight global warming. First make a five-minute phone call to Xcel Energy and tell them you want to receive 100 percent of your electricity from solar and wind power (Colorado residents currently get over 60 percent of their electricity from coal.) Second you can write Mark Udall and Michael Bennet (our U.S. Senators) and tell them to pass the upcoming climate bill, which aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 80 percent by 2050.
