In response to Dr. Hertzberg's editorial: “The greatest scientific hoax of this century,” Dr. Hertzberg claims Al Gore, the IPCC, and Jim Hansen are trying to perpetrate a hoax on the rest of us by convincing us that global warming is a reality. Al Gore and the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) shared the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize and Jim Hansen has headed the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies since 1981 and is an adjunct professor with the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences at Columbia University. The IPCC consists of experts in climatic change from around the world and has released four major reports since their inception in 1988. But please don't pay any attention to these experts because we have our own resident “expert” here in Summit County!
In its latest report (2007), the IPCC found that: 1) warming of the climate system is unequivocal, 2) most of the observed increase in globally averaged temperatures since the mid 20th century is very likely due to the observed increase in human greenhouse gas emissions, 3) human warming and sea level rise would continue for centuries due to the time scales associated with climate processes even if greenhouse gas concentrations were to be stabilized, 4) the probability that this is caused by natural climatic processes alone is less than 5 percent, and 5) world temperatures could rise between 2 and 11.5 degrees F and sea levels will probably rise by 7.08 to 23.22 inches during the 21st century.
Surely Dr. Hertzberg does not deny the well-accepted graph of carbon dioxide concentration in the Earth's atmosphere rising from around 310 ppm in 1955 to its current level of around 394 ppm. Also anyone familiar with paleoclimatology knows that there is a direct correlation between carbon dioxide concentration in the atmosphere and global temperatures. Apparently Dr. Hertzberg wants to convince you that humans had virtually no part in this huge rise in CO2. Please decide for yourself who you would rather believe.
