Heavy snow has started falling in Summit County as a predicted winter storm finally arrived Friday afternoon.
A winter storm watch has been issued for Denver from Saturday afternoon through late Sunday afternoon with forecasters predicting snow accumulations from 6 to 12 inches.
The National Weather Service said snow is now falling over the north central Colorado mountains north of Interstate 70.
Snow is expected to continue through this evening in the mountains with the highest accumulations over the Park and Gore Ranges including Rabbit Ears Pass.
The second storm is expected to move into the area Saturday afternoon with the heaviest snow expected to occur east of the Continental Divide over the Front Range, including Denver.
Forecasters say that a winter storm watch means there is a potential for hazardous winter weather with significant snow accumulations that could impact travel.
For today, Denver has a 60 percent chance of a rain snow mix with the mix to continue tonight.
The snow is expected to begin in earnest Saturday night with a 60 percent chance of heavy snow both Saturday night and Sunday.
In the high country, a winter storm warning has been issued which includes Summit County, Aspen, Vail, Snowmass, Crested Butte, Marble and Trappers Lake.
The National Weather Service is warning mountain residents that two winter storms will hit beginning today through Sunday.
Snow will be heavy in the mountains with some blowing and drifting. A foot or more of snow is likely by early Saturday morning.
Snow will continue in the high country through Sunday with skies beginning to clear Sunday night.
The second system expected to bring heavy snow to Denver and the high country will set up in the Four Corners and combined with a strong cold front will trigger the heavy snow.
