For more than thirty years the Breckenridge Outdoor Education Center (BOEC) has opened the outdoors to adults and youth with disabilities, serious illnesses and special needs with its adaptive sport and outdoor education programs.
For two years now, Art on a Whim has opened its doors to thousands of customers in need of a laugh or in search of a fun cultural experience.
This weekend, Art on a Whim and the BOEC are joining forces to raise money in support of the BOEC's mission to “expand the potential of people with disabilities and special needs through meaningful, educational and inspiring outdoor experiences.” Those experiences include teaching wounded veterans how to ski or ride, despite the physical challenges presented by their injuries, or introducing a group of inner-city teenage boys to the wilderness and using the outdoors experience to help them develop inter-personal and leadership skills. They can also include helping a woman with quadriplegia find the inner-strength and courage to challenge herself on a high ropes course.
Visitors to Art on a Whim this weekend will not only have the pleasure of helping support such a great cause; they will also be treated to an exciting artist's exhibition and demonstration, courtesy of Fritz Anders. Anders hails from Castle Rock, Colo., and calls his style of art “pyrographics.” Pyrographics is a fun word for wood-burning.
Fun definitely helps describes Anders' work as well. Anders adds a whimsical side to many of his pieces, allowing his imagination and the natural patterns found in his wood canvas to bring his work to life. Knots in the wood are transformed into eyes or a moon; wood grains become animal fur, cliffs or clouds. In essence, Anders gives pieces of pine, birch or oak new life by enhancing their natural characteristics with a series of burns and color stains.
This Saturday and Sunday, Anders will be working on a couple of new pieces at Art on a Whim. In addition, he will be showing off a large collection of his most recent works. As Anders works on a new piece, the air in the gallery is filled with the lovely scents of burning wood. As you view his work, you may just feel as if you're outside enjoying a roaring camp fire. And in the spirit of the upcoming holiday season, shopping at Art on a Whim this weekend is supporting a great cause. Proceeds from every sale made over the weekend will be donated to help further the BOEC's mission to open the outdoors .
