One man received second- and third-degree burns over half of his body and three homes were demolished when a fire broke out early Thanksgiving morning in Dumont.

The man was flown by helicopter to University Hospital following the 4:20 a.m. blaze in serious condition, Clear Creek County Sheriff Donald Krueger said.

The name and age of the burn victim have not been released.

The fire, which was on Foxfire Lane in Dumont, near Interstate 70, quickly spread from one home to two other nearby houses before it was extinguished about 7:30 a.m., Krueger said.

Firefighters from the Evergreen Fire Protection District, the Central City Fire Department and Clear Creek Fire Authority fought the fire while wading through snow, he said. They were able to prevent it from spreading to large trees, he said.

Witnesses heard several explosions that likely were paint cans or hair spray cans exploding, but nothing major, Krueger said.

Two of the homes were burned to the ground and a third had significant damage, Krueger said.

“They were pretty much destroyed,” he said.

The cause of the fire is not yet known. Three families were displaced.
