Fourth graders at Silverthorne Elementary are collecting supplies for a school in Kenya.
SILVERTHORNE — Pens, staplers, children's books, spiral notebooks — these are all items being collected through Dec. 18 by Silverthorne Elementary School fourth-graders for a school in Kenya.
The adopted school is located in Machakos, Kenya, and the Silverthorne supply and book collection is part of a program put on by Trans-Afrika Cultural Institute, a U.S. nonprofit that provides books, clothes, computers and medical supplies to specific Kenyan schools. Machakos is a village found approximately 30 miles east of Nairobi.
According to Silverthorne Elementary School fourth-grade teacher Elizabeth Janick, she got the school involved in the project because of her previous experience teaching in a bilingual school in Honduras.
“I got 700 books donated to the school because there were no books,” Janick said of her Honduras experience. She returned to the United States six months ago, and recently joined Silverthorne Elementary School's teaching staff.
Janick found out about the Kenya program, presented it to the principal, and created a school-wide book and supply drive that started in November. Needed supplies include books, paper, markers, staplers, etc. Money is not being collected.
The fourth-grade class has taken charge of the project, and they'll managing the collection and delivery of the items, Janick said.
“In addition to sending supplies, we will also become pen-pals with the students there, and we will receive pictures of the children,” she said in an e-mail.
A Kenyan man will also visit the fourth-grade class on Dec. 15 to teach them about the country.
To donate books and supplies, give it to a Silverthorne Elementary student or drop it off at Silverthorne Elementary's front desk during school hours.
