Good morning and welcome to Summit Up, the world's only daily column that's glad it doesn't live in Alaska.
With the sun setting quite early these days, we're getting sluggish and sulky. All we can do is be thankful for the fact that we're not in Alaska, where it's dark A LOT during the winter.
According to Livedenalialaska.com: “The first thing people think of when talking about Denali, Alaska weather is the winter. The cold. The dark. The isolation. But for those of us who live up here, it's a time of thrill, exhilaration, and magic. In Denali, Alaska, yes it gets dark. At the peak of winter solace the sun rises just above the horizon and hoovers. You don't know if the sun is going up or going down. You can't tell the direction of east or west by the sun…it doesn't move. Not up, not down, just stays in one spot. And if you happen to live behind a mountain range, or any small bump of landscape for that matter, you won't see the sun at all. Luckily there is a great little valley in Denali, a great little dip to the horizon where the sun nestles in for the three hours she shows her light.”
OK, so maybe, just maybe we should be thankful for the thrill Alaskans get from the darkness, and we should try it out sometime. And for now, we're liking the sun.
We're also thankful for fruit snacks and green tea. We love chewy gummies tasting of strawberry, cherry and grape. Green tea is appreciated for its health benefits. Oh, and we like our skis.
What are you thankful for during this holiday season? We know it's not Thanksgiving anymore, but we're trying to be thankful for something on a daily basis. So, e-mail us at summitup@summitdaily.com and let us know.

In cute doggie-related Thanksgiving news, Magi Aldridge of Breckenridge wrote in to tell us about her bulldog. She said: “Wiley, a local bulldog, has just returned from winning the National Bulldog Costume Contest in Kansas City, Missouri over the Thanksgiving holiday. Dressed as a turkey, Wiley strutted his stuff in front of judges and a large crowd of spectators. He was accompanied by his owner, Magi Aldridge, who was dressed as a pilgrim. In addition, Wiley earned a much coveted third place rosette in the open dog class at the AKC sanctioned Bulldog Club of America National Show.”
Dogs dressed as turkeys? What is this world coming to?! Sounds pretty funny actually. We likey. Yay for Wiley! Summit County does love its dogs (and cats too). So, you locals should keep your eyes pealed for the pet calendar to benefit the local animal shelter. It's filled with resident pets, in all their adorable glory.

In local education news, we recently visited the new CMC building in Breckenridge. We're sure you've already heard it, but the new school in super nice! What a great investment for the community!

In wrinkly-skin news, we're making a public plea for everyone to wear sunscreen every day, even if it's stormy, cloudy or evening. Why? Because it's the best beauty secret EVER! We're pretty sure that by wearing sunscreen, we'll preserve our skin and look hawt way longer. And think about how much money will be saved later on trying to recapture that youthful glow. Summit County's elevation is simply too high to ignore wearing sunscreen. So, slather it on. This is your public service announcement.

We're out, dipping ourselves in sunscreen and sipping from our teacup in our quest for eternal youth.
