SUMMIT COUNTY — Hanukkah starts Saturday, and with it comes a few fun Jewish holiday celebrations in Summit County.
A Hanukkah menorah lighting will be held at the Blue River Plaza and the Riverwalk Center in Breckenridge Monday. The Chabad Jewish Center of Summit County will be lighting a giant menorah at 5:30 p.m. and everyone is welcome to attend.
Hanukkah is highlighted by “the kindling of the menorah each night of the holiday,” said Rabbi Dovid Mintz, director of Chabad Jewish Center, in an e-mail. “It is a holiday that enriches our lives with the light of tradition. In ancient times our ancestors rededicated the Temple in Jerusalem with the Menorah. Today, we rededicate ourselves to making this world a better and brighter place.”
The menorah lighting event will also provide Hanukkah doughnuts, potato latkes (pancakes) and chocolate Hanukkah gelt (coins). For more information about the event, call (970) 476-7887 or e-mail info@JewishBreckenridge.com.
The Synagogue of the Summit (SOS) is hosting Hanukkah events as well — starting Friday and running through Sunday.
“We will be hosting several special events to celebrate the Hanukkah season,” said Les Caplan in an e-mail. “It may be interesting to both locals and visitors to know more about the congregation and our holiday celebration activities. The SOS welcomes Jews who live in or are visiting Summit County, along with our non-Jewish friends and family members.”
The Synagogue of the Summit will provide holiday and Sabbath religious services, and a community Hanukkah party.
A Shabbat/Hanukkah service is scheduled in the Silverthorne Town Council chambers on Friday at 7:30 p.m. — bring a menorah, candles and finger food to share.
“This weekend we will focus on the always difficult issue of Jews and mixed families dealing with the Christmas season,” Caplan said. “Rabbi Joel Schwartzman from Denver serves our congregation part time and will be spending the weekend here in Summit County. His perspective on the Christmas season is always very interesting and he will lead the discussion at our adult education class at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Silverthorne Town Council chambers.”
The congregation will finish the weekend with a Hanukkah party and potluck dinner at the Summit County Community and Senior Center on Sunday at 5 p.m. Please bring a dish to share with eight people, along with a menorah and candles if available.
