Salem, a Boulder-based hippie-hop band, is blowing up Summit County this weekend with lead man Todd Anders Johnson's jazz-hiphop-funky-fused compositions. Salem will perform at Copper Mountain Resort's U.S. Snowboarding Grand Prix on Saturday (outdoors at the base of the Exhibition venue on Lower Bouncer), and Sunday at three20south in Breckenridge. Both shows are set to start around 9 p.m. Copper's show is free.
Originally a Seattle band, Salem was reborn a few years ago after Johnson moved to Colorado. Since 2008, they've been touring extensively throughout the Northwest.
Johnson, who plays the drums, sings and composes Salem's songs, said, “We mix it up like a lot of groups do these days — a funky, R&B thing, a little bit of hip-hop and a jazz sensibility. ... I have players that are really talented. We're not a garage jam band; the musicianship is high.”
And Salem's no stranger to the mountains — it's played at big ski and snowboard events, including the EXPN's Winter X 12 Games, and the band has songs featured in Japanese ski films and Warren Miller's “Off the Grid.”
The band is currently traveling throughout the U.S. and Canada on the Risan Project's multi-media eco tour — another Johnson creation. The tour features film premiers with Sweetgrass Productions “Signatures,” a 100 percent human-powered ski, snowboard, telemark and noboard film. Speakers from Al Gore's Climate Project also give talks at select shows.
