BRECKENRIDGE — A snowboarder at Breckenridge Ski Resort triggered an avalanche on Tuesday after ducking a rope above tree line, according to the Colorado Avalanche Information Center website at http://avalanche.state.co.us.
“They were completely buried except for a hand sticking above the surface. Fortunately their three friends acted quickly and dug them out, using their hands,” according to the website.
Recent snowfall led to high avalanche danger this week, and folks in the backcountry are advised to be especially cautious on steep slopes at and above tree line where “fresh top and cross loading has occurred,” according to the website.
Numerous natural and human-triggered avalanches have been reported this week in the Summit County area.
An avalanche Wednesday afternoon caused temporary closure of Highway 6 near Loveland Pass after it covered the road in 6 feet of snow.
Snowfall is not in the forecast again until Sunday, when there's a 10 percent chance.
