SUMMIT COUNTY — With no end in sight to Summit High School sophomore Kelly Secor's Lyme disease treatment, a fundraising event has been scheduled to help with medical and living costs. “Kick it for Kelly” — a community party — is set for Beaver Run Resort and Conference Center from 6-9 p.m. Feb. 5. It includes live music by Elvis Mows the Lawn, a selection of heavy appetizers, beer and wine, plus a silent auction including a one-week stay in the Turks and Caicos. Tickets cost $35 and they can be purchased at various locations around the county.
More info about Lyme disease:
‘Transmitted by the bite of a tick, Lyme disease is a bacterial infection caused by the spirochete (spiral-shaped bacteria) Borrelia burgdorferi. Lyme disease is a systemic infection that can affect almost any part of the body. Although Lyme disease is the most well known of the tick-borne infections, multiple infections can be transferred at one time by a single tick. The presence of multiple infections tends to further complicate diagnosis and treatment.'

A little history
When Kelly became ill in eighth-grade, her family and doctors couldn't figure out what was wrong with her. After multiple years of undiagnosed illness, the Secors found out she had Lyme disease in February 2009. Careful research led Kelly and her mother, Nancy, to Kansas City, Mo., for daily IV treatments, and they've been living there since August. Kelly's treatment is not covered by medical insurance.
“We originally came thinking we'd be here maybe three months for treatment,” Nancy said. “Here we are five months later and we're still here. She's showing progress, but with the disease it's difficult.”
Kelly used to play soccer, run cross country, race with the ski team and play lacrosse, but her illness has made participating in sports impossible — her goals include feeling better, going to school full-time and participating in sports again.
If people want to help but can't attend the party, personal donations can be made out to “Kelly Secor” and sent to: Kelly Secor, c/o Alpine Bank, P.O. Box 739, Dillon, CO 80435. According to a press release, an anonymous donor has agreed to match all donations made up to $20,000.
“Thank you from my family to the Summit County community for the incredible support,” Nancy said. “It's beyond words how much we appreciate it.”
