You know when the prom committee chooses “Tainted Love” (by one-hit wonders Soft Cell) as its theme song, it's going to be a good, retro irreverent time.

The Breckenridge Elementary PTSA is throwing an '80s prom night, compete with guests wearing mullets, leopard-skin pants, big hair, taffeta dresses and matching cummerbunds. The fundraiser will benefit the elementary school, specifically funding the school's main goal this year of installing soundproofing panels in the gym/cafeteria, as well as a built-in sound system. About 10 percent of the proceeds raised will go to Doctors without Borders, for the Haitian relief effort.

A DJ will spin all the '80s favorites, from Madonna to metal, prizes will be awarded to the best costumed male and female, and through ballots, people will vote for a queen and king. Plus, every half hour, there'll be a chance to win the big decade's swag, from movies to music.

Since the PTSA has never dipped its toes into an '80s dance — and with the recent popularity of the Six Million Dollar band, which plays 1980s covers — members thought it'd be a great fundraiser. Terry Green, a PTSA member, hopes the event will draw in residents who aren't necessarily connected with Breckenridge Elementary, as well as those who are.

“I'm not from the '80s, but a majority of the parents are, so they wanted to relive their fun, crazy, wacky hairstyles and prom dresses,” said PTSA member Kristy Henry.

“It's just going to be really silly prom stuff,” Green said.
