Like many in Summit County, driving west out of the tunnel (especially on Sunday afternoon) to see the beautiful mountain range that is home is a welcome sight. I am reminded how lucky I am to live in a mountain community.
Ten minutes later I'm at the Gateway to Summit County, aka Silverthorne, marked by factory stores, fast food restaurants, and one of the most congested intersections of I-70 in Colorado. We all must be honest — it's not exactly beautiful, but still I love it here.
With the Dillon Dam as its backdrop, a huge Home Depot is about to be constructed. At the base of Wildernest and Mesa Cortina will be a Lowe's. I will let others talk about detrimental effects on recreation, safety, local business, traffic congestion, design, employee housing and the environment. I want to talk about the aesthetic disaster should this be allowed to happen.
Whether you live in Dillon, Keystone, Frisco, Copper Mountain or Breckenridge, Silverthorne is the Gateway to all these communities — our community — and we're in for a big change. Visually, I don't think we can afford more blocky, gray, lifeless-looking buildings. This type of development is totally out of character with our small mountain culture, lifestyle and architectural style.
Moreover, as happened with the car dealership long gone where Lowe's proposes to build, when these big boxes are done transforming our community, they will vacate those buildings and they may stand empty and ugly for years. The mess won't be their problem anymore, but ours. And you think the empty car dealership is an eyesore? These big boxes are many times bigger. “Nice gateway!” tourists will say as they speed through Summit County on their way to some other resort with mountain character.
Both projects have passed their preliminaries to start businesses in your gateway. There are hundreds of reasons why they should not be allowed to continue, but our Silverthorne town council cannot beat this invader alone and they need your help. Please come to an informational meeting to add your support to a win the battle for our community against what will undoubtedly be the ugliest pair of buildings to grace our gateway: 9 a.m. Monday Feb. 22, at Cup in the Corner in the Alpine Earth Center (Alpine Gardens). It's George Washington's birthday — Do it for George, the environment, for yourself! Please also come to the town council meeting Wednesday, Feb. 24, at 6 p.m. and voice your objections to this massive, environmental eyesore!
The tea and coffee is on me.
