National spearfishing champion Kimi Werner will be giving Summit County a little taste of Hawaii today, as she stops by five local liquor stores as part of a promotion for Primo Island Lager — “Hawaii's original beer.”

Werner, a Maui native, will be at Dillon Ridge Liquor (noon-1:30 p.m.), Copper Mountain's Incline Bar & Grill (2-4 p.m.), Frisco Liquor (4-5:30), Breckenridge's Quandary Grill (6-8 p.m.) and Old Chicago (9-11) in Silverthorne.

The tour through the county is part of a promotional event to announce that Primo products will now be available at select bars and retail locations in Colorado.

In 2008, Werner, 30, captured the Women's National Spearfishing title by spearing a 33-pound striped bass in Malibu, Calif.

The sport of spearfishing involves shooting a fish with a spear from relatively close range. Oxygen tanks are not used in the sport, as the participants must hold their breath for up to four minutes in depths as deep as 200 feet below the surface.

Spearfishing is considered to be a dangerous sport.

Werner, despite only taking up the sport about five years ago, has become one of its best and regularly spends 10 hours in a day working on her technique, diving skill and endurance.

Though the sport can be tricky for some to pick up, Werner feels the biggest thing is understanding the fish.

“One of the best tricks a spearfisher can take advantage of is a fish's curiosity,” she said in a statement released by Primo. “Fish see their world with their eyes and with vibrations picked up by their lateral line. By moving slowly, you can move in and approach them.”

Joining Werner around the county will be Makani Tabura, a Hawaiian radio personality, and Devin Ryan, a Primo ambassador.
