In its season-opening meet, the Summit High track and field team had two individual top-5 finishes and five relay teams among the top-8.
The Tigers finished ninth for both boys and girls Tuesday in a 4A meet at Jeffco Stadium in Lakewood, but SHS head coach Kristy McClain was pleased with her team's performance — especially considering the elements the Tigers have trained in so far this spring.
“I am not unhappy with that because it was our first meet of the season and we did not have our entire team available to compete,” McClain said via e-mail.
D'Evelyn won the meet for both boys and girls.
The top finish of the day for Summit came from senior Nick Adolph in the triple jump. Even though Adolph had yet to jump outdoors this spring (the SHS jump pit is still too wet to use), he cleared a distance of 36 feet and 10 inches, giving him third place in the meet.
“He is definitely an athlete to watch this spring,” McClain said of her senior jumper.
Another impressive finish came from Cali Greksa. The junior distance runner finished in fourth place in the 3,200-meteer run with a time of 13 minutes and 12 seconds. She finished only 2 seconds out of third place.
Summit then had five separate relay teams — three on the boys' side and two on the girls' — earn top-8 finishes.
The 4x400 relay team — made up of Adolph, Shane Arnold, Chris Braun and Diego Andraca — finished the race in 4:14.51, good for fifth place.
In the 4x100 relay, Ridge Strickler, Landon Wade, Oliver Biggin and Braun combined for a seventh-place finish.
The final boys' squad with a solid finish was the 4x200 team, which was eighth in the race. Strickler, Andraca, Adolph and Curtis Dankof competed in the relay.
In the girls' competition, Kayla Duplan, Alyssa Lewark, Erica Duplan and Olivia Lincenberg combined for a seventh-place showing in the 800-meter medley relay.
Also, the girls' 4x100 team — Hannah McGrew, Taryn Spencer, Lewark and Lincenberg — finished eighth.
The Tigers are back in action Saturday, when they travel to the Liberty Invitational at Liberty High School.
