SILVERTHORNE — The American Red Cross Mile High Chapter has awarded the Silverthorne Recreation Center with its 2010 Nonprofit Partner Award.
The Silverthorne Recreation Center has been a leader among the more than 400 organizations that partner with the Red Cross Mile High Chapter to serve as shelters when called upon. The local recreation center has been a shelter with the Mile High Chapter for over 10 years.
The Silverthorne Recreation Center is a warm place to rest for numerous stranded travels when I-70 is closed and road conditions get worse. They have consistently opened their doors when needed and remained open for days at a time when the roads take longer than usual to reopen.
During one of the largest storms of the decade — December 2007 — the center was the first shelter to open its doors and it took in over 500 travelers. That night, Red Cross partners in Summit County sheltered around 2,200 people.
According to the Red Cross chapter, the Silverthorne Recreation Center is not only a great sheltering partner, but it also provides many health and safety training programs, such as aquatics education and lifeguard training.
